After a couple of months off to record Part Primitiv we're back into the swing of things with another European concert, this time in Roma. Following a 2.00 a.m. start we arrive at midday in Rome to be greeted by, what is for us Northerners, a positively furnace like blast of summer heat. Sweltering was not the word for it !
Once again our hosts show their generosity by taking us in hand, forgiving us our truly paltry grasp of the language, driving us to our B&B, taking us out to a truly excellent dinner then walking us round some of the sights (Il Colosseo, Fontana di Trevi). Following this we retired to our B&B to gain a fitful few hours sleep in the oppresive Roman heat.
Next day we awake somewhat refreshed and are once again driven to the venue by our hosts in preparation for the evenings concert which, due to the heat, proved to be one of the hardest we've ever played. Being the professionals that we are we battle on through the heat by drinking a gallon of water each (which promptly flies out of all available pores). Support on the night was from Echoes Of Silence, who even did an excellent version of Tunnelvisions "Morbid Fear", plus the ambient glacial sounds of Netherworld.
So it just remains for us to say a thousand thanks to Carlo, Paul, the Echoes of Silence crew and everyone else for all their help. Especially Carlo who truly went out of his way to help us find alternative flights, book us back into the B&B etc. etc. A true gentleman ! In fact the only non friendly Italians we encountered were the dreaded "zanzare bastarde" who ate Stu and myself alive ! (despite our best efforts and the liberal application of a gallon or two of anti mosquito spray...)
There was however a downside to the expedition as, due to the latest terrorist activities, Liverpool airport was closed so our return flight was cancelled and we ended up getting back a day late and to a different airport ! So in true Rock & Roll fashion we ended up getting the train and a bus home. No stretch limos for this band !
05/07/2007: Following our return home it is our sad duty to pass on news of the sudden death of Paul Tired. Paul was not only the DJ for the gig (playing some excellent tunes) he also helped chauffeur us about, showed us his city and, along with the In The Night Time crew, generally looked after us. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. R.I.P.
